PROVIDING COMMUNITY HEALTH SERVICES IN BARABANKI
The State Trading Corporation’s initiative in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh amplified the national urgency of boosting community health services in rural India through corporate social responsibility. The Corporation chose Barabanki—a backward district in Uttar Pradesh—for its intervention due to the district’s high number of tobacco users and multiple illnesses associated with tobacco addiction. The goals and objectives of the intervention were in line with the National Tobacco Control Programme. Thanks to the campaign, the consumption of tobacco and tobacco products, especially among women and children has declined considerably in the district even as it also created awareness about blindness caused due to development of cataract.
