‘There’s a little bit of SAIL in everybody’s life.’ This is the punch line of India’s largest steel producer SAIL. The Maharatna public sector company that has nearly one-sixth share of the domestic finished steel output, has undertaken a massive modernisation and expansion plan. The company employed around 98,000 people across India and its turnover rose to Rs. 52,000 crores in 2013-14. The company gives due care to environment protection. With a view to properly manage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, SAIL has started Carbon Footprint study that measures the greenhouse gas emissions at each stage of its life. The company is doing the study for four of its steel products – rails, plates, merchant products and wire rods – at Bhilai plant. Under the study, carbon footprint is being evaluated at each individual processes of steel making starting from raw materials to finished product.
