GREENING OF PHOSPHO GYPSUM HEAPS
While it’s a rarity that an Indian solution has resolved a global problem, Coromandel International Ltd’s project on greening of phospho gypsum (PG) heaps offers an environmental solution to a perennial problem of fertiliser plants worldover. The project assisted by TERI has helped reclaim acres of land filled with an industrial waste PG through a mychorhizal technology assisted bioremediation that involves use of micro-organism mycorrhiza to turn a wasteland into a green belt. Coromandel has already completed plantation of more than 7,000 plants of five varieties in 7 acres on the erstwhile PG heap. The project is going to set a benchmark for all phosphoric acid plants across the world for improving environment.
