Ahmedabad Muncipal Corporation

The Sabarmati River, passing through Ahmedabad city was subjected to severe pressure and abuse owing to growth and expansion. Innovative and sustainable intervention was needed to tackle health and environment hazard posed by the river. The main task was to transform the lives of over 10,000 families, mainly slum dwellers residing on the riverbed. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation created a special purpose vehicle to take on the challenge of adequate resettlement and rehabilitation measures for them. During last seven years, over 500,000 people have been rehabilitated to ‘pucca’ houses with all basic amenities. They are also enjoying benefits of primary health, education and income generation activities. It has also prevented filth from being discharged into the river.
