Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike

The crown title of India’s “Silicon Valley” would have been inappropriate for Bangalore but for the BBMP’s pioneering GIS-based unit area system that calculates tax based on expected returns from property, mode of usage and location and facilitates online payments. Property tax collection has more than doubled to Rs 1,300 crore last fiscal and the Rs 2,200-crore target for this fiscal looks easily attainable going by the Rs 1,128 crore mopped up during April-July. The BBMP is all poised to use the GIS-based system to improve services in other areas like town planning, engineering, solid waste management, education and health.
