Translating Governance into Mandate

  • Over the past four years, the macroeconomic framework of the country has witnessed considerable strengthening. The government took advantage of the clear mandate of commissioning structural reforms. The resolve to bring about a change has been evident in the action taken on some of the most difficult and long pending areas of reforms including GST and infrastructure.
  • However, off late fresh challenges, have come to the fore especially on the external and internal fronts. While the rise in international commodity prices and increased propensity of countries towards protectionist measures have emerged as major concerns on the external front, the less than expected progress on flagship initiatives like Make in India have seen the government in stock taking mode.
  • This is where 2018-19 will be important in translating Governance into Mandate for the current government. How can this be achieved?

Beyond Investment Dogmas

  • The government has taken moderate steps towards fiscal consolidation, disinvestment, banking reforms and GST implementation. However, these have been in the range of tried and tested measures. If India is to take the next leap towards emerging as the fifth largest economy, then THE FIFTH YEAR should see the government move beyond the traditional investment dogmas. That will be the mandate as the government moves into the last lap, if it wants to ensure that it bests the tap in this five-year marathon.

De-globalisation, the New World Order

  • Globalisation and the Flat World were the mantras in the previous two decades. Winds of change started blowing across the world about a year ago with a new American President in place who came to power with the call of America First. With regard to India, one of the first things that were affected was the outsourcing and the IT industry. India’s IT companies are re-inventing themselves in a new future. Similarly, with tariff wars particularly with China reaching a crescendo, global trade has been in a swirl. The European Union and Brexit are also going through gut-wrenching challenges. All this has created a New World Order. How can India re-position itself in this changing world?
